Cort Writes

San Diego, CA—It was all going to be great according to Jesse Kim.
After years of failed New Year’s resolutions, he finally made the one resolution that would make a difference. He bought a Kindle e-reader.
“Famous authors tell you to read all the time. ‘If you want to be a writer you need to read a lot.’”
But Jesse found it hard to get through a physical book.
“You can’t change the font size or make it brighter. Or bookmark a page. Okay, sure, with an actual bookmark, but now I got to start carrying around bookmarks?”
Used to reading text on his computer and phone, Jesse hoped that buying a Kindle e-reader would help him adjust to reading more books.
“It didn’t. It wasn’t the font or brightness, it was reading itself. It’s still boring. I’m just doing the same thing but look less cool. The only perk is that skipping chapters is way easier.”
So what would Jesse say to other writers in his position?
“The Fast and the Furious. That’s all you need. It’s got structure, characters, excitement. It’s a course on storytelling. Then write books for people who don’t want to read. That’s an untapped market.” He pats his temple. “Work smarter. Not harder.”
